How did you get started mountain biking?

My husband and I were avid runners and one day my body reached a point where my hip and knee hurt so bad I couldn't run anymore. He had the idea of buying bikes as an alternative to running outside. Long story short, he didn't want to wear spandex. We bought mountain bikes instead of road bikes. Fast forward to the present, and not only do we BOTH wear spandex, but we also ride both mountain and road bikes. Haha! I am so thankful we started on the dirt because this is where my love for cycling really is.

How did you get started mountain biking?

A friend knew how much my husband, Greg, and I loved to tree ski so she thought we would like to bike through them too.  She was right! She took us out to Rowlett and we loved it.  I was on a borrowed bike and Greg was on a Huffy.  We went and bought our own mountain bikes the next day.  However, there was no Dirt Side Sisters and I had to learn the hard way how to ride!

How did you get started mountain biking?

Thru my boyfriend at the time, hubby now. When I returned to the States in '98, I got an entry level rockjumper from Performance Bikes. Although my first rides with clipless pedals weren't pretty (I feel A LOT with the bike still attached), I was hooked. It gave me confidence and helped bring me out of my shell (yes, I was VERY introverted and very intimidated when I was younger, always wanting/needed to prove myself)

How did you get started mountain biking?

During my first year of teaching I became good friends with a co-worker that was on my team. For about a year, she told me multiple times she was going to get me on a mountain bike. I remember hiking Northshore with her and saying there was no way I would ride a bike over rocky and rooty sections. She finally convinced me to give it a try. My first ride was on gravel at Greenbelt on a borrowed bike. The same day, we rode Corinth Community Park. After that, I was hooked! Today I easily ride over those many sections at Northshore that I once said I would not ride a bike on.

How did you get started mountain biking?

I had been road riding with a friend in Dallas and loving that.  On one of our all day adventures around the city, we stumbled on the levees.  As we stood there looking at them straddling our road bikes, my friend turned to me and said, "You know what we need now... Mountain Bikes!" I found a decent hardtail and it sat in my living room for weeks.  I didn't know what to do with it, it was so big!  On a whim, I went down to Austin to attend a women's' skills clinic where I was hooked.  That was where I first saw Lisa, and found Dirt Side Sisters on the internet. I started riding with DSS soon after.  The power and positivity of women learning from women has stuck with me and I'm so proud and honored to be part of the Support Crew.  I'm a better rider and person because of DSS.

How did you get started mountain biking?

I started riding dirt bikes in 2013. In 2018, I had a knee injury sustained while getting my motorcycle license and I was forced to stop almost all physical activity. The first activity I was cleared for was cycling! My boyfriend actually tried to buy me a mountain bike, but it felt aggressive in the store and I insisted on a comfy hybrid that I personally believed would be great for all types of riding! My hybrid was amazing for riding on the Trinity Trails and on concrete! On one Saturday in the winter of 2018, my boyfriend and I were riding, and he veered off the concrete and up this crazy dirt hill. I tried to follow but my tires were wobbling, and I had almost no control in the dirt. I was mad that I couldn't follow him, and I believed that I just didn't know what I was doing and that I needed to build skills to ride on the dirt. This is when I immediately went to google to search for mountain biking skills clinics to improve my abilities. I first found a DORBA co-ed skills clinic that I tried to convince both my boyfriend and my friend Nikita to go to. While I was looking at the event, I saw in the directions that they were saying there would also be a Dirt Side Sisters clinic at a different portion of the Horseshoe trail. My interest was immediately peaked, and I found this group on Facebook and joined the private group! My first ride with the Dirt Side Sisters was at the rescheduled ride at the Parks of Aledo and Quanah Hill. I came to the POA with my Fuji Hybrid bike. It was after meeting this wonderful group of women, that I learned that not only did I need the appropriate skills to ride dirt, but that I needed the right equipment. And unfortunately, my hybrid was not built to shred with these sisters. I immediately started researching and got on the DSS Facebook group to get advice for my first mountain bike purchase. On February 15, 2019 I purchased a 2018 Diamondback Lux 3 Hardtail from Ray Jay's Bike Shop. My first official ride on this beauty was at Northshore on February 24 and I rode a little less than 8 miles. I was hooked. I love that this sport is something I can do 100% on my own. I love riding my dirt bike, but it is a much heavier machine and harder for me to lug around without the help of my boyfriend. With my mountain bike, I am self-sufficient, and I love the confidence that provides. I love this group of women and I tried to make it to every ride! I even raced a few of the DFW summer series races.

How did you get started mountain biking?

I grew up in Austin and have always loved outdoor adventures but I didn't really get started with mountain biking until I found Dirt Side Sisters in 2018. At that time I was going through a tough year so I decided on a whim to join DSS and attend a clinic. I was so nervous when I showed up at the clinic and didn't know a single person! But the DSS instructors welcomed me and taught me tons of new skills in just one day. I left with a huge smile, new confidence, and new friends. It was one of the best decisions of my life!

How did you get started mountain biking?

It was a complete fluke. My kids and I found dirt trails at our local park. Then decided to find a real trail. We just happened upon Gateway. We loved it but realized we needed “real” bikes. Bought three Rockhopper hard tails from the LBS, rode like crazy and loved every minute. Then we all wanted full suspensions. I think we bought nine bikes in about six months. It quickly became an obsession.

Knob Hills. It’s a bit of a love-hate relationship. There are several parts that I just can’t conquer, but every time I’m there, I can truly see how much I’ve progressed. There, more than anywhere else, I always leave feeling proud of how far I’ve come.

How did you get started mountain biking?

I started mountain biking in college after a group of guys took me and some friends down to Slickrock in Moab for our very first MTB adventure. I loved it so much, I bought my first bike (that I rode for 20 years) as soon as I could and with clipless pedals to boot! I remember when I fell for the first time and it wasn’t because of not clipping out - I was SO excited! I didn’t ride much when my kids were little but started riding again discovering the DFW trails (and readjusting to my pedals) about 5 years ago.
